6/29/2023 0 Comments 1st to dieWhile we all understand a murder mystery implies, well, murder, I think most of us would still love, on some level, to put on our sleuth uniforms and solve one for ourselves. Murder mysteries have become so profoundly-entrenched in our culture it's become virtually impossible to make your way through life without coming into contact with them, and as is the case for most people, develop a certain fascination for the enigmas they present. James Patterson Sends his Sleuths for the First Hunt In the midst of widespread fear and panic, four crime-solving friends bond together to find the culprit, each one holding part of the key to the solution. The Women's Murder Club is one of the many series he has running, and the title which kicked it off, 1st to Die, takes us to a San Francisco shocked and reeling from the recent crimes of a serial killer. James Patterson might conceivably be one of, if not the most prolific author of thriller literature in the modern era. 6/29/2023 0 Comments This Was Our Pact by Ryan AndrewsOur group of friends made their pact to follow the lanterns down the river, and have set off on the journey. After her death in 2005, the New York Times called her “ the accidental matriarch of the civil rights movement”.īut there was nothing accidental about it, the 96-minute documentary contends, demonstrating her activism was sweeping and expansive. This one action is what she is known for in countless school textbooks and even an episode of the BBC’s science fiction series Doctor Who. The sequence makes for a memorable opening to The Rebellious Life of Mrs Rosa Parks, the first documentary feature about Parks, streaming on Peacock from Wednesday.īased on a biography by Jeanne Theoharis, the film is a riposte to popular culture’s reductive habit of framing a person’s life and legacy in a single headline – in Parks’s case, the quiet seamstress who refused to give up her seat on a crowded bus to a white passenger in Montgomery, Alabama, one winter evening in 1955. It is a redemptive moment amid the profanity of a civil rights hero being paraded like a curiosity for the cameras. But the fourth panelist, entertainer Nipsey Russell, who is Black, said he would have to disqualify himself because he marched with Parks in Selma, adding: “Miss Rosa Parks is 10-foot tall, she’s a legend and a hero in the democracy of the United States, not just among Black people.” 6/29/2023 0 Comments Little darlings melanieI praise her for such a true reflection of motherhood, it’s not one that I have seen very often, particularly in books. Straight off the bat the way in which Melanie Golding captures the early days of motherhood was honest, raw and truthful. Little Darlings follows Lauren, a first time mum of twin boys. Although I did completely freak out when I found a silver fish in my bathroom around 4 weeks ago!! To be perfectly honest, I find the concept absolutely terrifying! Melanie Golding pitched this story perfectly, for me it was just the right level of unnerving, sinister and creepy. Melanine Golding headed up each chapter with a folk tale, myth or fairytale around changelings – some were a lot more creepy than others. The book is a take on the folkloric tales of changelings, I hadn’t read any other books or stories about them, so this was new to me. After that opening chapter I knew I wouldn’t put the book down until I found out what had happened to drive this woman to take such action! Little Darlings is Melanie Golding’s debut, and what a debut it is! A psychological thriller and a half, the opening chapter of which made the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end and chilled me to my core! The imagery of a mum walking into a reservoir clutching her newborn twins while police watched on helplessly, sucked me in straight away. Firstly, thank you to and for the ARC of this book. 6/28/2023 0 Comments Throne of the crescent moon book 2This was partly because of current political tensions. When Ahmed started writing his own fiction, “I knew from the get-go that I was going to write something with a kind of Arab, Islamic flavour to it,” he says. “You look back and think: ‘Gosh, that was pathetic that I got so excited.’ He was a sidekick, a happily colonised guy, but, hey, he looked like he could be my uncle.” Growing up, Ahmed latched on to the few Arab characters he could find in pop culture, such as Indiana Jones’s Egyptian sidekick Sallah. “He sat me down and had a drink with me.” “George R R Martin was the first person to come over and say: ‘Don’t feel too bad, I lost the first three years I was nominated,’” Ahmed says. It didn’t win, but there was a consolation. His book, Throne of the Crescent Moon, is set in a fantastical version of Caliphate-era Baghdad, where an ageing “ghul-hunter” gets embroiled in a struggle between a tyrannical caliph and a Robin Hood-style thief. At the 2013 Hugo Awards, the Michigan-based author Saladin Ahmed was up for Best Novel, an award that has previously gone to William Gibson and Philip K Dick. 6/28/2023 0 Comments Heart of the sun warrior bookTo save her mother, Xingyin embarks on a perilous quest, confronting legendary creatures and vicious enemies. In this role, Ryan sees the cutthroat world of politics first hand and uncovers an illegal U.S. Greer (played by James Earl Jones), was diagnosed with late-stage pancreatic cancer. Jack has been promoted within the CIA to Deputy Director of Intelligence because his boss and close friend, Adm. The setup for the funeral scene is complex but necessary to appreciate the emotion packed into its four minutes. Mockingly, he adds that Ryan “believes in loyalty, cleanliness, and knot tying.” Ford’s performance as a conflicted intelligence analyst pulled into increasingly deadly situations that threaten not only his life but also his sense of idealism makes Jack Ryan into a hero guided by a relatable belief in “right and wrong.” Especially, in my opinion, for anyone who has served this country in uniform or as part of the national security structure. “He’s a boy scout,” grumbles Robert Ritter (played by Henry Czerny), the deputy director of the CIA and one of the most Machiavellian of all characters in the movie. Ford imbued Ryan with an aura of sincere American patriotism that never comes across as forced, campy, or jingoistic. Five actors have played Ryan over the years, but the man who undoubtedly made the character into a cinematic franchise was Harrison Ford. |
